Telemedicine for Depression

Telemedicine for DepressionThe rollercoaster of emotions stirred up during times of crisis can certainly take its toll on the mind and body. Other times, just feeling down more days than up never feels any good either. Depression can approach anyone, either head-on or creeping up unexpectedly until a feeling of not being sure what happened emerges. Whether challenged by self-isolation or wanting to do something about a chronic feeling of sadness without leaving the home, telemedicine for depression may be a viable option.

Beyond the Blues

We all experience feeling sad for one reason or another but, eventually, it lifts and we move on. Forced isolation can stifle moving on and the blues might manifest into feelings of hopelessness, failure, despair, and many other unexpected emotions.

If one is lonely already, there may be a history of anti-social behavior and isolation could be a part of one’s attempt to protect themselves from outside influence. These feelings and social avoidance choices can take a toll.

As reported by Insider, according to Dr. Slatin Ivanov, a New York based psychiatrist,

“All our systems, including social, psychological and biological, have developed around social groups and interaction with one another,..Social isolation in most cases would bring the negative effect of loneliness, anxiety, and sometimes depression.”

In the study, ‘Social isolation, loneliness and their relationships with depressive symptoms: A population-based study’ posted by PLoS One, a Peer-Reviewed Open Access Journal it was stated that,

“Social isolation in terms of weak connectedness with relatives and with friends and loneliness were associated with depressive symptoms even after controlling for age, gender, employment status and other covariates. The association of loneliness with depressive symptoms was independent of and stronger than that of any social isolation indicators.”

These professional opinions and studies all indicate that isolation and loneliness are capable of catapulting people into mild to severe depression. Fortunately, there is no need to suffer alone in this time of simple digital technology.

Telehealth Assistance

Telemedicine for depression with Dr. Lisanti of Integrative Med Solutions (IMS) can be an excellent tool. This is a way to connect, either through video or voice calls, to help professionally alleviate feelings of depression. Receiving naturopathic advice on a variety of botanical, nutraceutical, dietary and homeopathic remedies could assist in navigating depression back to a balance of optimal mental and physical health.

In 2018 the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health published a CADTH Rapid Response Report posted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), U.S. National Library of Medicine which stated that,

“There was concurrence among included studies that the evidence supports that psychological treatment delivered by telehealth is clinically effective and that the magnitude of the treatment effect is comparable when the same intervention is provided by telehealth or by traditional means such as in-person/same room therapy.”

Take advantage of this telemedicine opportunity to connect with an expert on naturopathic medicine for an individually tailored remedy protocol for depression. There are many applications including a log list of Chinese herbs clinically studied to help alleviate depressive symptoms.

One study by Chinese researchers published in the journal, Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment concluded that,

“In the present study, we reviewed important data regarding the use of CHFs [Chinese herbal formulas] in the treatment of depression. In summary, diverse CHFs have been used for various types of depression for many years, with experimentally and clinically demonstrable effects. This review highlights the possibility of CHFs as evidence-based treatment options for depression,”
