Spasms and Twitches
Spasms and TwitchesSpasms and twitches are rarely painful but can be annoying. Because of their unfamiliar irregularity it is also no wonder that some minor alarm may arise.

As mentioned, these reactions usually do not pose a threat and with some naturopathic medical treatment through Integrative Med Solutions (IMS) may be successfully alleviated or dissipated altogether.

However, if spasms and twitches occur alongside slurred speech, paralysis, one-sided body weakness and/or high fever this may be an indication of a more serious condition.

Another result of muscle spasms could be the formation of a muscle knot. Due to the constant firing of the spasm the muscle becomes overrun with constant protein synthesis and overall fatigue causing it to seize or sort of freeze. This becomes a trigger point which can be released by deep manual muscle manipulation and/or acupuncture.

Acupuncture: Relieving Spasms and Twitches
Suffering through uncontrollable spasms and twitches will most likely result in a myriad of muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety drugs and even Botox injections from a traditional, Western medical approach. Using IMS acupuncture, after an initial consultation, a treatment protocol of clearing wind, tonifying the blood and yin as well as smoothing the liver may be prescribed. Naturopathic doctor and licensed acupuncturist, Dr. Lisanti, will apply safe, ultra-thin needles to correlating point locations along a meridian or energy channel. Depending on where your spasms re-occur will depend on the location of treatment however other, unrelated areas may also be targeted. Considering the example of the above protocol, the meridian worked on may include an Aggressive Energy Treatment of the urinary bladder points particularly UB 13, 14, 15, 18, 20, 23 which run along the spine. This approach can alleviate spasms and twitches in the lower back and trunk.

Clinical Nutrition: Increasing Vitamin and Minerals for Spasm Relief
Low calcium, potassium, magnesium and an acidic diet are some of the major causes of spasms and twitches. Alongside acupuncture, Dr. Lisanti may recommend adding more mineral rich foods to your diet which may include broccoli, almonds, flaxseed and more.

Botanical Medicine: Individually Prescribed Herbs for Spasms and Twitches
IMS is able to safely prescribe herbal treatments that can relieve your spasms and twitches without interfering with any of your medicines or conditions. Some of these herbs may be: rosemary, celery seed, cramp bark (viburnum opulus), yarrow root, devil’s claw and possibly a Chinese herbal plaster.
