Skin ConditionsSkin is body’s the largest organ. In total it weighs approximately six to nine pounds covering an area the size of about two square yards. It regulates your body temperature, reaction to outside senses, and protects you from viruses, diseases, bacteria, the elements and more. When the skin reacts with such presentations as rash, itchy, infected, bumps, tags, oily, dryness or fungus it can be attributed to everything from allergies, diet, environmental toxins and more. Conventional medicine will often attempt a steroidal or otherwise topical ointment, oral remedy or light therapy often switching prescriptions until one takes. Even when approaches seem to help it is often the symptoms that dissipate and not the cause. Integrative Med Solutions (IMS) uses acupuncture and naturopathic medicine to confront skin conditions topically, internally and energetically.

Acupuncture: Calming the Skin

Approximately seven million Americans suffer from psoriasis. Those that have had the privilege of experiencing acupuncture to relieve and even stave off this condition are minimal. This is mainly due to blind faith in conventional medicine when an over 3,000 year old practice such as acupuncture can often surpass synthetic, often toxic conventional remedies. A study out of UCLA on acupuncture treatment for psoriasis found that over half the subjects that participated experienced a complete clearing of their psoriasis while another twenty-five percent had significant improvement. Licensed acupuncturist Dr. Lisanti of IMS will work on our specific skin condition according to your detailed health history. Some points used include Large Intestine (LI) 11 just near the lateral elbow to dissipate damp heat; Gall Bladder (GB) 20 just below the skull on the back of the neck dealing with a possible wind-heat challenge; or Urinary Bladder (UB) 11, 12 & 13 along the upper spine for a wind-cold invasion which can often manifest as severe itching.

Botanical Medicine: Natural Skin Healing

At IMS there is a full array of herbal and plant solutions to various skin conditions. The phytonutrient healing properties are embraced by the body especially when used topically. Dr. Doris Day, clinical professor of dermatology at NYU Medical Center recommends remedies that Dr. Lisanti has been using with safe and impressive results. Day describes her favorite, “If I had to choose only one herbal remedy for the treatment of skin problems, aloe vera would be my number one choice. It has been widely recognized as a plant with special healing capabilities.” Other choices IMS may add to your guided naturopathic protocol include: Arnica flower used as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and analgesic; comfrey for cuts and bruises; and tea tree oil a potent anti-fungal anti-septic.

Nutraceutical Supplementation: Skin Health from Within

Vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes all play a vital role in healthy skin. We attempt to obtain many of these through our diet however many people need a boost. IMS will assess what may be the best nutraceutical(s) for your situation. Vitamin A will encourage healthy soft tissue and mucous membranes; B3 can repair damage caused by cholesterol; and Vitamin C is excellent at healing wounds. There is internal support too such as acidophilus and digestive enzymes to avoid the skin’s sometimes acne response to dietary challenges like lactose.

Homeopathy: Deep Layer Skin Support

Homeopathy works on the ‘like cures like’ philosophy. With over two hundred years behind it, these remedies are derived from highly diluted compounds of plants, animals and minerals that safely mimic similar symptoms associated with a particular health problem. For skin conditions, Dr. Lisanti looks and listens to determine how your body may be manifesting the problem and why. From there he may prescribe such homeopathic remedies as: Rhus toxicodendron (blisters, herpes, shingles, diaper rash); Pulsatilla (varicose veins); Thuja occidentalis (warts, brown spots); or Belladonna (rosacea).

This is small example of the vast remedy support IMS can offer. Everything from scar tissue therapy to a clinical nutrition diet for the skin is available to catapult your healing as well as enhance your quality of living.
