Herbs, Nutrition and Acupuncture for Managing Uterine FibroidsUterine fibroids can also be asymptomatic especially due to the variety of locations they manifest. Tumors will often shrink by menopause (when estrogen levels recede unable to feed the tumors) and in many cases are never discovered.  It is difficult to diagnose fibroids without a microscope, ultra sound or in some cases a pelvic MRI test however if the location is prominent a pelvic exam could find them. Integrated Med Solutions (IMS) approaches this difficult and often painful condition with a combination of acupuncture and naturopathic medicine. These natural remedies could very well relieve chronic discomfort that has otherwise been recorded as being treated with a hysterectomy, one of the number one choices for conventional medicine. In a pilot study published in 2002, researchers assigned a group of women with uterine fibroids to six months of treatment with Chinese medicine, body therapy (including bodywork), and guided imagery. Study results showed that fibroids shrank or stopped growing in 22 patients in the treatment group, compared with three patients in the control group.

Acupuncture: Managing Fibroids
In Classical Chinese Medicine the development of uterine fibroids is believed to be the result of stagnation of Liver Qi (life force energy, pronounced ‘chee’). Liver Qi is related to uterine blood as well as the menstrual cycle. When this flow is interrupted, fibroids can result. Acupuncture along with Chinese and conventional herbs work hand in hand at shrinking and sometimes eliminating fibroids altogether. Some point locations that may be safely and painlessly manipulated could be: LV3 which sits on the top (dorsum) of the foot just below and between the first (big) and second toes. SP3 is a spleen acupuncture point that helps move blood into the Lower Jiao helping relieve fibroid manifestation and symptoms. This point is located just above the knee.

Hypnosis: Quelling Suppressed Anger
Another interesting theory regarding the development of fibroids is the presence of suppressed anger. Dr. Lisanti of IMS, is trained in clinical hypnosis which has the ability to peel away deep layers of, in the case of fibroids, resentment and anger that has been held onto. This can result in not only relief from this condition but also the possibility of a renewed quality of life.

Botanical Medicine: Herbal Remedies
Nature offers a long list of natural healing remedies and at IMS, Dr. Lisanti is able to assess and control specific doses to target a fibroid challenge safely and effectively. Some useful herbs that may be used could be: red sage, red peony, green tea, red clover, chaste berry (vitex) and poke root.

Clinical Nutrition: Eating for Fibroid Prevention
Foods can have a beneficial or detrimental medicinal affect on our bodies and fibroids are no exception. IMS can create a path to better wellness for each individual by recommending a list of healing foods. By avoiding sweets, processed foods (including meat) as well as the consumption of cold drinks (especially sodas) and raw foods, you may be able to strengthen the effectiveness of the spleen which in turn may help prevent or shrink fibroids.
