Acupuncture for StressAcupuncture for Stress
Managing stress and irritability can be approached in three different ways:

  1. Use a conventional doctor and take prescription medicine.
  2. Use acupuncture and naturopathic medicine.
  3. Do nothing.

Obviously those who choose to do nothing will tax their body so much that in due time, if the stressful situation does not dissipate, a barrage of chronic to life threatening challenges just may occur. Choosing a conventional medical doctor more often than not results in being prescribed anti-anxiety, anti-depressant and/or sleeping medications.

Using acupuncture and naturopathic medicine works on two fronts: First, it encourages your body’s energy to re-direct itself back into optimal performance. Second, it prepares and enables your body to embrace naturopathic remedies such as homeopathy, botanical medicine, clinical nutrition and more.

Acupuncture: De-Stressing Stress
Calming irritability by allowing stress to travel out of the system is one of the things acupuncture may quickly remedy. The sympathetic and parasympathetic systems control the fight or flight response we have been wired to use since worrying about being attacked by a wooly mammoth. Today, our predator is stressful family life to stressful work life and anything in-between.  Cortisol is one of the major chemical components that our body releases to deal with stress. It can cause irritability, anxiety and weight gain. In a prison in Sweden, auricle (ear) acupuncture was administered to inmates suffering from stress which resulted in lower cortisol levels compared to an untreated group. In addition, fewer medications were needed to calm the inmates who had received the acupuncture.

Nutraceutical Supplementation: Amino Acids, Vitamins, Minerals and More
IMS can work with an individualized program of nutraceutical supplementations to alleviate stress and irritability. 5-HTP (hydroxytryptophan) is an amino acid that is naturally occurring which can be replenished through oral supplementation safely administered by Dr. Lisanti. It has shown great results in alleviating depression, sleep challenges and suppressing the appetite all of which can be symptoms derived from stress. Nutraceutical supplementation can also including a B-complex vitamin and/or a calcium/magnesium formula to steady your sympathetic response to stress. Interestingly, a two-group, double blind, placebo-controlled experiment was published in the July 2010 issue of “Psychopharmacology” which found that taking a B-complex “improved ratings of stress, mental health and vigor and improved cognitive performance during intense mental processing.” It is not recommended to randomly take a B-complex without guidance from a practitioner such as a naturopathic doctor.

Homeopathy: Subtle Changes Big Results
Dr. Lisanti is also trained in homeopathy. Using specific, safe, easily administered formulas to deal with stress and irritability naturally is highly possible. It is a centuries old practice that uses many different remedies derived from plants, minerals, animals and more to slowly enhance your body’s challenged vibration on deep levels. Some homeopathic remedies for stress and irritability include kali phos, gelsemium, chamomilla and passiflora.

Botanical Medicine: Classical Chinese herbs and more
IMS offers a wide variety of Classical Chinese medicine as well as eastern and western herbs from many parts of the world to ease, prevent and heal stress/irritability challenges. Dr. Lisanti will determine the safest most effective formula for your individual needs according to your unique history. Some remedies will ease blood pressure, rapid breathing and mental clarity while others may strengthen your adrenal flow, digestive difficulties and frayed nerves. These formulas may include such choices as licorice, schisandra, turmeric, ashgawanda and juniper.
