There are many types of ovarian cysts including Follicular, Corpus Luteum, Hemorrhagic, Dermoid, Endometroid, Polycystic and Cystadenoma. Symptoms can range from asymptomatic to severe pelvic pain (often misdiagnosed as appendicitis) to infertility.

Often, birth control pills will be recommended to regulate hormone levels or, in more serious cases, a cystectomy will be performed to surgically remove the cyst from the ovary. Integrated Med Solutions (IMS) offers a ‘first responder’ approach before resorting to the aforementioned treatments. By incorporating acupuncture and naturopathic medicine remedies, your ovarian cysts may be able to be managed or, in some cases, completely resolved.

Acupuncture: Energy and Cysts

A Norwegian study entitled, “Can Acupuncture Prevent Cystitis in Women?” concluded that acupuncture is a valid alternative treatment for the prevention and dissipation of frequently recurring female cystitis. Classical Chinese medicine targets specific energy depletions or aggravations within the body that can lead to various diseases. In the case of ovarian cysts, acupuncture is used to calm or tonify this misguided energy to place the body back into optimal homeostasis. Dr. Lisanti, IMS Naturopathic Doctor and Licensed Acupuncturist, may use (among many others) the acupuncture point Qu Quan which is the Chinese name for the point Liver 8 (LV8) a potentially beneficial remedy for ovarian cysts. It is located just above the back of the knee (popliteal crease) and is used to clear excess heat patterns as well as tonify the Yin from mental, physical and emotional strain (anger is a common proponent of cystic manifestation anywhere in the body).

Clinical Nutrition: Eating to Prevent Ovarian Cysts

Dr. Lisanti may also recommend eating or avoiding certain foods depending on the level of estrogen they contain and how it may affect each individual. Foods that contain high amounts of estrogen can contribute to cyst growth. Some foods to avoid might be: soybeans, carrots, cherries, chick peas, most dairy and wheat. Foods that inhibit estrogen, helping prevent cystitis might be: berries, broccoli, figs, pears, white rice and white flour.

Botanical Medicine

Remedies derived from plants, particularly herbs, can be beneficial in preventing, shrinking or eliminating ovarian cysts. Some western and Chinese herbal treatments may include black cohosh, prickly ash, dong quai, evening primrose oil and licorice.
