Acupuncture for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)Acupuncture for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
IBS has many theorized triggers such as diet, hormones and/or medical side effects however emotional stress is often a number one cause. This has been described as the “brain-gut-interaction” which explains how emotional and gastrointestinal functions are closely related as a result of the response of the autonomic nervous system. Conventional drug therapy has had little effect on alleviating IBS symptoms which is why, according to a 2006 study in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics titled, Systematic review: Complementary and alternative medicine in the irritable bowel syndrome, cited that 50% of IBS patients turn to acupuncture and naturopathic medicine for treatment. Integrative Med Solutions (IMS) works with naturopathic doctor and licensed acupuncturist, Dr. Lisanti, to move toward IBS with a traditional, holistic approach.

Acupuncture: Treating IBS
According to Classical Chinese medicine, treating the excesses and/or deficiencies associated with the spleen and lung meridians is often an excellent protocol for approaching IBS. At IMS, specific acupuncture points are used to adjust stagnant qi (life energy) which is otherwise flowing optimally. According to a 2004 and 2006 study in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics and the Journal of Gastroenterology, respectively, found that, “Digestive symptoms could improve after acupuncture treatment partly because acupuncture affects the motility and perception of the digestive organs.” Some examples of located points along with their respective names include: On the abdomen – CV12 Zhongwan, CV4, Guanyuan, SP14 Fujie, ST27 Daju. On the back – BL18 Ganshu, BL21 Weishu, BL23 Shenshu, BL27 Xiaochangshu, BL33 Zhongliao.

Counseling and Clinical Hypnosis: Approaching the Brain-Gut-Interaction
Because emotional stress is often one of the main causes of IBS, counseling at IMS could be the first approach to your healing. Dr. Lisanti is trained in such things as mind-body techniques, couple and short-term counseling along with stress management and clinical hypnosis. These tools can be highly beneficial in alleviating or, in some cases, eliminating IBS.

Homeopathy: Balancing the Digestive Tract
IMS prides itself on taking in the patient as a whole being not just about what they are suffering from. This is one of the foundations of the practice of homeopathy, a safe, subtle energy therapy derived from plants, minerals, animals and more. Such remedies as: Argentum nitricum (silver nitrate), Colocynthis (bitter apple), Lilium tigrinum (lily) and Nux vomica (poison nut).

Botanical Medicine: Herb and Plant Remedies
There is nothing like allowing to the body to heal naturally and the remedies found in botanical medicine can do just that. Whether Chinese herbal medicine or Western herbs, Dr. Lisanti is well versed on the dosage, protocol and safety for each individual prescription. For IBS some botanical remedies include: Evening Primrose, Peppermint, Dan Shen, Wormwood and Bupleurum.
