Acupuncture for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)Acupuncture for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

IBD usually presents as two manifestations which is either ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn’s disease (CD). UC attacks the inner lining of the colon or rectum and CD results in the deeper linings of the intestinal wall. Although conventional medicine offers little successful treatment for this ailment many medicines are prescribed to reduce inflammation and other uncomfortable symptoms.

Integrative Med Solutions works on a more traditional level incorporating acupuncture and naturopathic medicine as treatment that is often more readily accepted by the body allowing it to begin a slow road to healing from within.

Acupuncture: IBD Point Work
In a 2004 trial conducted by the Department of Medicine and Gastroenterology at Friedrich Alexander University, German researchers found, “With regard to general well-being, traditional acupuncture was superior to control treatment [and] traditional acupuncture offers an additional therapeutic benefit in patients with mild to moderately active CD (Crohn’s disease). Dr. Lisanti, licensed acupuncturist, will assess your specific IBD history and apply acupuncture points that can manipulate and re-align excess or deficient energy often having to do with the spleen, kidney, large intestine and liver. Some points that may be worked could be: LV (Liver) 3, UB18, GB34

Botanical Medicine: Chinese Herbal Medicine, Plants and Herbs
Along with acupuncture, botanical medicine can work very well for IBD symptoms. Dr. Lisanti is well versed in not only Eastern and Western applications, including Chinese herbal medicine; he can also assure the utmost safety when it comes to any possible contraindications. This means if you are taking a conventional prescription his protocol will not interfere. Deficiency in the qi (life energy) and blood can often result in an IBD challenge. One Chinese herbal medicine formula that may be used could consist of such herbs as: astragalus, cuscuta seed, noto ginseng root, costus root and halloysite.

Clinical Nutrition: The Anti-Inflammatory Diet
At IMS clinical nutrition is an essential approach to traditional healing. By determining foods that may increase or decrease your IBD affliction can be highly beneficial. Under the supervision of Dr. Lisanti, an anti- inflammatory diet that consists of such foods as: kelp, turmeric, ginger, salmon, flaxseed, shiitake mushrooms, green tea and papaya can considerably lessen the severity of IBD. In turn, avoiding inflammation causing processed meats and sugars as well as white flour and trans-fats will help greatly.

Nutraceutical Supplementation: Reducing IBD with Vitamins, Minerals, Enzymes and More
Many physical and mental challenges are due to improper supplementation. IMS will assess what nutraceutical supplement you may be lacking to help your IBD challenge. Probiotics (good bacteria) are often decreased in those suffering from this condition. “A study published in the February 2005 issue of the journal Gut found that administration of a probiotic and a prebiotic to patients with ulcerative colitis improved inflammatory symptoms and helped regenerate epithelial tissue.” There have also been studies regarding IBD being linked to deficiencies in vitamin D, B, K and E.
