Acupuncture for Autoimmune SymptomsAutoimmune diseases can manifest in many different ways given their variety. Organs affected range from the endocrine glands such as the pancreas or thyroid, blood vessels, joints, connective tissues, skin, red blood cells and muscles. People can be challenged by one or more autoimmune diseases at the same time and managing such is difficult for conventional medicine given the unknown source of each condition.

Autoimmune diseases include: Rheumatoid arthritis, Type 1 diabetes, Multiple sclerosis, Celiac disease and Dermatomyositis.  Although symptoms are vast there are three at the top of the list. These are: fatigue, fever, and malaise (general feeling of illness). Conventional medical treatments attempt to control symptoms and encourage the system to fight the disease however this approach has had minimal effect on the root cause. Acupuncture and naturopathic medicine use a multi-layered approach to find where the autoimmune disease has originated thus attempting to heal it from within. At Integrative Med Solutions (IMS), naturopathic doctor and licensed acupuncturist, Dr. Lisanti, assesses each individual patient and their unique symptomatic history to construct just the right protocol of treatments that the body can holistically embrace.

Acupuncture: Autoimmune Response
According to a study reported in the June 2006 issue of ‘Mayo Clinic Proceedings’ (a periodical published for the renowned Minnesota clinic), acupuncture was used to treat patients with fibromyalgia (a suspected autoimmune disease primarily affecting the musculoskeletal system). It found that patients treated with acupuncture as compared to a control group reported significant improvements in overall symptoms. Dr. Lisanti’s Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM) training is at the forefront of his acupuncture and naturopathic remedies. According to CCM, autoimmune diseases can be the manifestation of such things as stagnant qi (chee – life energy) and accumulated phlegm with heart and liver deficiency and deficient fire as in Grave’s disease or a Yang deficiency as in Hashimoto’s disease. Targeted acupuncture points will attempt to help autoimmune symptoms in a safe, controlled and virtually pain-free application.

Homeopathy: Healing with Deep Vibration
Using the harnessed energy from diluted plant, mineral, animal and other natural materials, homeopathy works as a like-cures-like philosophy. This means that if a certain source mimic’s similar symptoms of a particular ailment, ingesting a formula from that source should ‘burn-out’ the chronic or acute challenge. Working with trained homeopath, Dr. Lisanti, a deep, layered healing can potentially take place. In the case of autoimmune diseases, homeopathic remedies administered may include: Lachesis, Arsenicum Album, Calcarea Carbonica and Graphites.

Nutraceutical Supplementation: Boosting the Immune System
Although autoimmune diseases have no known cause the National Institute of Health (NIH) reports that approximately fifty million Americans suffer from one form or another with women being a surprising seventy-nine percent of that number. Some believe this is due to continual hormonal changes throughout a woman’s life in conjunction with susceptibility to the aforementioned eighty plus autoimmune diseases out there. Certain vitamin, mineral, enzyme and amino acid nutraceutical supplementation is believed by some to improve autoimmune challenges. This includes Carnosine, a dipeptide amino acid which helps slow glycated protein formation (sugars that cause an unnecessary immune response); Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, C and DHEA.
