Acupuncture for AsthmaAcupuncture for Asthma
Causes of asthma can be related to physical conditions such as hereditary manifestation, being born a preemie or a common cold. Other causes include environmental factors that may be work related or allergens from plant life and animals. Smoking, of course is another major cause. Conventional Treatment consists of powerful lifelong steroidal remedies as well as other temporary medical approaches that can often tax the entire body system. Integrative Med Solutions (IMS) understands the seriousness of each asthma condition and offers a personal solution to each individual seeking an alternative approach. Dr. Lisanti, naturopathic doctor and licensed acupuncturist, will safely guide you through a series of natural solutions alongside any conventional medications you may be taking. IMS offers acupuncture and naturopathic medicine which work hand-in-hand to alleviate, and in some cases eliminate, asthma related challenges.

Acupuncture: Painless Needling Brings Breathing Ease
The Journal of Complementary Alternative Medicine published a 1995 study that show a reduction of pharmacologic medication as well as proven safety when acupuncture was administered. The healing begins with the painless opening of blocked, energy pathways through needling manipulation along channels called meridians. Dr. Lisanti will formulate a specific meridian protocol according to your individual intake assessment. Some popular points include Lung 1-11 which run along the arm into the chest; Stomach 12-18 (with the exception of ST17) located running down from the clavicle along the front of the rib cage; and  Spleen 17-21 travelling just under the nipple upward toward the pectoralis muscle then turning and ending in front of the underarm.

Botanical Medicine: Herbs and Plants
IMS works with Classical Chinese medicine which includes an array of botanical remedies such as Chinese skullcap, Chrysanthemum, Aconite (Fu Zi), Licorice (Gan Cao) and Astragalus (Huang Chi) for asthma remedies. In turn, also used are other herb and plant remedies from around the world as well as right in our own backyard. There is the nut from the Ginkgo Biloba tree (it actually grows in Manhattan!) possessing properties found to inhibit PAF (platelet activating factor) which induces breathing challenges. There is also the Adhatoda leaf found in the lower altitudes of India and South East Asia which increases the viscosity of mucous to assist with expectoration. Other botanical remedies used may be wild cherry bark, slippery elm and garlic.

Environmental Medicine: Alleviating Outside Factors
As mentioned, asthma can be caused by environmental toxins and allergens. At IMS these factors are wholly considered for proper protocol treatment. Dr. Lisanti can assess specific molds and pollens that may cause breathing challenges as well as work related toxins, tobacco addiction (learn to quit) or even specific pet dander.
