Disk Herniation
Disk HerniationThese soft tissue disks cushion both the symphyseal and synovial vertebral joints that, with daily use do succumb to rigidity over time which escalates the chances of a herniation. It is estimated that 30% of Americans as young as thirty years old, show evidence of beginning disk deterioration.

When a disk’s elasticity weakens it can rupture causing a portion to push or slip outside of its normal location. This unwanted move can shove against the spinal nerves and sometimes even the spinal cord which eventually causes the whole structure to compress. Integrative Med Solutions (IMS) can target the specific location of your disk herniation and successfully treat it with a combination of acupuncture and naturopathic medicine.

Acupuncture: Release the Disk

Using a Classical Chinese assessment, disk herniation can sometimes be the result of such things as qi (chee) and blood stagnation; spleen qi weakness; kidney and liver heat; or damp heat and phlegm accumulation. These diagnoses will enable licensed acupuncturist and naturopathic doctor, Dr. Lisanti, to direct hair thin needles into special point locations to relieve these challenging symptoms. Points for disk herniation can consist of locations such as UB23 near the second lumbar vertebrae, ST40 just above the ankle and LI11 near the elbow. Sessions are painless and results are often swift with a slow, steady rise to a more pain-free quality of living

Botanical Medicine: Strengthen and fortify the challenged periphery of disk herniation with herbal remedies.

Botanical medicine is the use of specially prescribed pain relieving and healing herbs along with other plant life mostly in the form of capsules, pills, tinctures and teas to allow the system to naturally repair itself. Traditional medicine offers synthetic formulas that are often just speedy mimics of the slower yet deeper and longer lasting effects of botanical medicine. Botanical medicine is a combination of slow building blocks that the body can recognize, assimilate and maintain. Disk herniation can create swelling, tenderness and irritation and to permeate these painful symptoms, Dr. Lisanti may turn to anti-inflammatory herbs such as:

  • Turmeric
  • Licorice
  • Ginger
  • Boswellin
  • Arnica
  • Bromelain
  • Papaya
  • Devil’s claw
  • St. John’s Wort
  • White willow

These herbs should only be taken under the strict supervision of an IMS naturopathic physician so as not to contraindicate with any medicines or medical history that may apply.

Clinical Nutrition, Homeopathy and Nutraceutical Supplementation: More approaches to Disk Herniation

It is possible that one or all three of these modalities may be used in utilizing multiple remedy scenarios. This can include an anti-inflammatory diet which Dr. Lisanti will direct you to gaining power over your pain by simply changing your diet; using deep level homeopathic solutions; or recommending precise dosages of glucosamine, chondroitin and msm for vertebral strengthening.
