Detoxification: The Importance of CleansingAccording to the Washington State Department of Ecology, it is estimated that the U.S. government has tallied 5,000 chemical ingredients in cosmetics; more than 3,200 chemicals added to food; 1,010 chemicals used in 11,700 consumer products; and 500 chemicals used as active ingredients in pesticides. These estimates are expected to grow exponentially.

A report by the Harvard Medical School, cites that, “…heavy metals (lead and mercury), organic solvents, alcohol, and ionizing radiation are confirmed environmental teratogens (agents that cause developmental malformations), and exposure could contribute to pregnancy loss. What’s more, caffeine, cigarette smoking, and hyperthermia are also suspected, and the danger of pesticides to the human fetus remains unknown”

Your body is like a walking sponge. It absorbs essential and not-so-essential external as well as internal influences on a daily basis. Your body’s detoxification system which includes the lymph, liver, kidneys and skin, are short of miraculous. In syncopated harmony they are capable of keeping the body free of most poisons and toxins. Yet, over time, these pollutants can systemically accumulate overwhelming our natural detox ability. If not addressed, they could have a potentially negative affect on your optimal health.

Whether exposed to a variety of air or food-borne daily toxins or a single, large influential event such as household or occupational chemical exposure, cleansing your system with a detoxification program that specifically fits your lifestyle may greatly improve your quality of life.

Detox Case Study
The importance of cleansing the body’s system has been challenged by a variety of conventional medical reports citing that the body is capable of using its own, unique, powerful, and continuous  detoxification abilities to attempt to maintain homeostasis. However, hundreds of case studies speak for themselves. Here is one from Ellen W. Cutler, DC, and Richard Tunkel’s, MD, DC, article “Time for a Detox”:

“Jared, a 14-year-old diagnosed with asthma, was brought in by his parents. They were increasingly frustrated by his worsening symptoms in spite of prescribed asthma medications. They hoped that [detoxification] treatments would be the answer, since allergies are a major cause of asthma. When he returned in three weeks, he looked completely different. His asthma symptoms had disappeared and his acne had improved. He said he felt more energetic than he had in years, and he needed less sleep to feel rested.”

Parasitic Paranoia
The human body plays host to a potential multitude of parasites that in many instances are harmless and can even be beneficial. Yet, on the other hand, certain interlopers can also, unknowingly, wreak havoc on various parts of the human system. It is a phenomenon that conventional medicine has not completely grasped but has been at the forefront of traditional detoxification programs for many years. Discover magazine printed this statement in its August 2000 issue describing the mystery and inherent power of parasitic invasion:

“Every living thing has at least one parasite that lives inside or on it, and many, including humans, have far more. Scientists…are only just beginning to discover exactly how powerful these hidden inhabitants can be, but their research is pointing to a remarkable possibility: Parasites may rule the world. The notion that tiny creatures we’ve largely taken for granted are such a dominant force is immensely disturbing. We are collections of cells that work together, kept harmonized by chemical signals. If an organism can control those signals — an organism like a parasite — then it can control us, and therein lies the peculiar and precise horror of parasites.”

Ridding the body of dangerous or burdensome parasites can be achieved through a specific detoxification program resulting in unexpected possibilities such as more energy, weight loss or gain and freedom from digestive challenges to name a few. Choosing the proper and precise program using water, botanicals and fasting under professional, supervised guidance is essential to a complete parasitic removal.

Targeted Internal Cleansing
Specific ailments, conditions and other health challenges have the potential to be healed or greatly improved simply by adhering to a targeted internal cleansing detoxification program.  Whether it is attempting to rid the body of such things as heavy metals, fecal buildup or parasitic invasion, working side-by-side with a naturopathic doctor a detox program can be achieved safely and effectively.

There are scores of detoxification techniques that include acupuncture, botanical and fasting with some bordering on ‘fad’ or ‘trendy’ This, as well as the threat of systemic contraindication, is one of the many reasons to detox with assistance. Below are a handful of various detoxification remedies that may be applied individually or as a formula to target a specific ailment. It is important to understand that such approaches can easily be implemented into any lifestyle with minimal time and hassle. In addition, it cannot be stressed enough that it is imperative to not attempt to detoxify without notifying your doctor beforehand.
