Natural Treatment - Acupuncture for PCOS: Polycystic Ovary SyndromeIt is not completely understood why PCOS manifests in women but many studies have speculated that it is a genetic disease. A pelvic ultrasound can usually determine signs of PCOS that also goes by the names: polycystic ovary disease, functional ovarian hyperandrogenism, Stein-Leventhal syndrome (original name, not used in modern literature), ovarian hyperthecosis and sclerocystic ovary syndrome. Conventional treatment often targets hormone manipulation using such medicines as birth control or progesterone pills, anti-androgenins and glucophage to regulate insulin.

An alternative, less toxic approach could be a more systematically embracing choice. By visiting Integrated Med Solutions (IMS) you will experience a thorough history intake by Dr. Lisanti which will help determine the course of acupuncture and naturopathic medicine treatment options. He will take into account all your current medications, if any, and work around them in a safe, knowledgeable manner.

Acupuncture: Re-Setting the System
By targeting specific energy channels Dr. Lisanti, naturopathic doctor and licensed acupuncturist, will find stagnant blood and energy that could be impeding a healthy system. A painless protocol of small hair-like needles is used to stimulate or calm misguided energy and blood circulation. After several sessions, along with other naturopathic treatments such as botanical medicine, homeopathy and clinical nutrition, in many cases symptoms can dissipate considerably.

The American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism published a study of a group of women with PCOS who were given acupuncture. A second group was instructed to exercise at least three times a week, while a third group acted as controls. All were given information on the importance of regular exercise and a healthy diet.

“The study shows that both acupuncture and exercise reduce high levels of testosterone and lead to more regular menstruation,” says docent associate professor Elisabet Stener-Victorin, who is responsible for the study. “Of the two treatments, the acupuncture proved more effective.”

Botanical Medicine: Chaste Berry, Dandelion and Milk Thistle
After taking into account your full history, you may be given a safe but effective botanical remedy. These are plant and/or herbal substances used for centuries as the remedies of choice for many ailments.

  • Vitex a/k/a Chaste Berry: One of the leading botanical remedies for PCOS. It is said to help stabilize as well as stimulate pituitary gland function which regulates the release of LH (luteinizing hormone) the hormone that triggers ovulation. It also, indirectly increases progesterone production.
  • Milk Thistle and Dandelion Root: Used for liver detoxification where some believe hormones become backed-up which can cause menstrual as well as fertility challenges.
