Acupuncture for Insomnia
Acupuncture for InsomniaInsomnia can be caused by many different factors. Acute insomnia often results from stress, environmental disruption (such as excess light, sound or temperature), medication, food (especially food containing caffeine or other stimulants), emotional struggle, time change, illness and physical discomfort such as a healing broken bone. Chronic insomnia possesses more of a challenge inasmuch that it can result from deep emotional stress such as chronic depression, anxiety or chronic physical challenges.

More serious conditions including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and manic depressive disorder are often associated with insomnia. Addressing this condition can be approached in several ways. Conventional medicine offers a variety of over the counter and prescribed medications that initially work well but can sometimes unnecessarily tax the system. Acupuncture and naturopathic medicine are two other approaches that combine century old practices along with some other effective remedies that the body often has an easier time assimilating.

Acupuncture: Moving Energy to Help You Sleep
Conventional medicine widely accepts acupuncture as a legitimate medicinal remedy. In a 1982 study of acupuncture therapy in the outpatients-department of the University Clinic of Heidelberg by MV Fischer, it was found that 100% of patients treated for insomnia obtained beneficial results without recurrences within 18 months of follow-up. Integrative Med Solutions (IMS) licensed acupuncturist Dr. Lisanti will determine the best individual treatment for each patient. Acupuncture can move along energy that may be impinged and possibly contributing to insomnia. Some points that may be targeted are: UB (Urinary Bladder 15 just about the center of the back; HT (Heart) 7 just along the inside wrist and SP (Spleen) 6 slightly above the outside ankle.

Botanical Medicine: Herbal Remedies for Insomnia
Approximately 2000 years ago a book was written entitled Shen Nong’s Herbal Classic. Today, it is still considered one of the best resources for botanical remedies including those for insomnia. By obtaining a detailed intake of your symptoms, IMS can create an herbal/plant based protocol (both Classical Chinese and Western) to re-set your system back to its normal sleep pattern. The journal, Evidence-Based Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, reported findings of over fifteen-hundred subjects who used Classical Chinese medicine such as Zhi-mu (anemarrhena rhizome), Fu-ling (poria), Chuan-xiong (Szechuan lovage root), and Gan-cao (licorice root). It was found that treatments, “…effectively benefit sleep quality, improve sleep duration, and exhibit reduced side effects in comparison to Western medicines”.

Nutraceutical Supplementation: Strengthening Sleep with Vitamins and Minerals
IMS will also assess your current processing of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and more. Under guided supervision by Dr. Lisanti, proper dosages of insomnia treatments such as magnesium, melatonin, co-enzyme Q10 and calcium may be administered to strengthen your brain’s sleep distribution.

There are scores of other approaches that IMS and Dr. Lisanti can offer regarding insomnia challenges. Environmental medicine is another excellent tool along with clinical hypnosis, homeopathy and clinical nutrition.
